SCAN: Student Community Action Newcastle

scan@ncl.ac.uk

scan1

SCAN exists to serve the community by integrating students at Newcastle University within quality volunteering projects. There is a huge potential for reciprocal learning and development through uniting student volunteers and the wider community. Being at University brings about profound changes in personal development and there are so many options to help students make the most of this time. There are equally as many ways to help them fritter away this time! Volunteering is a superb way of learning new skills, having fun, meeting interesting people, learning about where you live and finding out who you are and what you want to be.

SCAN's Mission Statement

"To match the needs of the local community with the skills and enthusiasm of student volunteers"

SCAN History

  • SCAN started as a settlement project in the late 1960's
  • Students took part in activities that built links with the surrounding communities
  • SCAN became a registered charity in 1973

SCAN Today

  • SCAN helps students to find volunteering opportunities throughout Newcastle and the North East
  • We run our own, student-led projects that target direct community needs and student development
  • We work with lots of external organisations to give students as much choice as possible and allow various community groups to have access to their broad range of skills and knowledge.

How to get involved:

If you'd like to get involved in a project or find out more about volunteering we'd love to hear from you!

Here's what you need to do next:

  • Read the Volunteering section for information and an explanation of the benefits of volunteering
  • Have a look at the huge range of projects we have on offer and see if anything takes your fancy.
  • If you are an International Student please visit the International Students page for specific guidance.
  • Please bear in mind that many projects require a CRB Check.

Then either:

Come into the SCAN Office to find out more about specific projects or volunteering in general. If you can't come to the office during our usual office opening hours (Mon-Thurs 10-4pm and Fri 10-1pm) then please let us know and we can make an appointment with you.

Or

Contact us by Phone or Email to discuss your requirements or to make an appointment. It may seem like a hassle, but meeting face to face really is the best way for us to help you find out exactly what you're after. We can also inform you more easily about training requirements, inductions, CRB checks, directions and the like.
